On December 13, 2020, Governor Cuomo signed Assembly Bill A5630A reforming the statutory form and other powers of attorney for purposes of financial and estate planning. The new law effective on June 13, 2021, is intended to simplify the process in which a principal appoints an agent to manage their finances, should the principal become unable to act on his/her own behalf. While the power of attorney you have is still valid, you may want to contact our firm to discuss an update as the new law may make it difficult for your agent to validate his/her power when presenting the power of attorney to financial institutions/other organizations.
